The aim of a revision is to thoroughly clean and disinfect the canal system again in order to combat bacterial infection.

Root Revision

If a previous root canal treatment was not successful, a root canal revision is necessary. There can be various reasons for the failure of a root canal treatment. The microscopically small and complicated root canal system could not be cleaned completely, it could be that individual root canals were overlooked or the canal system was not filled sufficiently so that bacteria could recolonise these areas. Often this recolonisation of the bacteria leads to a chronic inflammation, which can also become an acute process. The treacherous thing about chronic inflammation is that the patient often feels no pain and thus only learns about the inflammation during a routine check-up at the dentist. However, such an inflammatory event is very stressful for the immune system, as it permanently fights the infection to prevent a transition to an acute process. Therefore these teeth must be treated.
Afterwards, the canals are hermetically sealed with a thermoplastic, biocompatible natural rubber, as in a root canal treatment
